Story 79 Old wise man Told By Mordant
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A long time ago, during one of my journeys, I met an old man ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ whoose search for the 'spirit essence' had led him to those ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ who knew the most about it. He trained both his mind and his ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ body, and soon they both became one. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ But before he could finish his studies, a vicious ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~ internal fight took place, and he decided not to get involved. ~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Therefore, he left the place, seeking a more tranquil ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ surrounding. On his journey to his new home, he ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ encountered many dangers, which increased his ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ knowledge about the creatures in the area. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Finally, when he thought he had climbed far enough, he built ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ a small hut, and started out on his new life. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~ Some time later, one of the members of his old community, fleeing ~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ from his master, settled down nearby. But ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ that, is another story. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Story

drink water
You put your lips to the spring and drink deeply from the cool waters.
Your head reels as a mystical vision overwhelms your senses.

Your mind is filled with the image of a stormy night, outside the temple gates. The lightning flashes and you see a small babe orphaned infront of the Temple. The gates crack open and the gatekeeper, not brother Mikkael, picks up the child and strides back inside the safety of the Temple.

The image dissolves and a new one begins to form.

Time has passed.
The babe is now a boy, not yet reached manhood. Diligently he does his chores around the Temple, and has an aura of confidence unusual for one so young.

The image dissolves once more, and you sense another one forming in the back of your mind.

Time has passed.
The boy has grown into a young man. Strong and quick, with wisdom beyond his years lurking behind his eyes, the man trains with his brother mystics. He easily defeats his brethen, two, three, even four on one. After his exertions are over, he bows humbly to the GrandMaster, the same GrandMaster that stands before you now, only younger. The man than takes his accustomed place at the GrandMaster's side.

The vision slowly dissapates before beginning to coalesce into yet another image from the past.

Lightning flashes above the Temple. It is night, one not so different from the one which first brought the boy to the Temple. The mystics are all asleep in the common rooms, all except for one. By the light of a carefully shuttered candle, one monk, the boy turned man, reads an ancient scroll. Thunder roars across the nighttime sky, and the late night reader starts, and quickly glances at the doorway of the archives. He quickly stands up and returns the scroll to an iron strongbox which he locks with a copy of the original key. Furtively, he slips back into the common room and lies down on his mat. He seems to fascinated with the knowledge he gleamed from the scroll to sleep, and instead stares at the ceiling, lost in his thoughts.

As you expect, the image disapates before reforming into another scene.

Time has passed once more.
The scene is the grotto where you now stand. The man stands before the GrandMaster. Gone is the humility from his stance. It has been replaced with arrogance. Boldly the man challenges the GrandMaster, confident in his newfound powers, and previously unsurpassed prowess.
For nearly hour the two masters fight. Finally it is clear that the GrandMaster has the upper hand. Calling upon some deep inner reserve of power, the challenger creates a mystical black cloud which obscures the grotto, and uses it to make his escape. Stopping only long enough to sieze a marvelous blue stone from the GrandMaster's room, he flees the Temple, heading up the mountain. No one dares give chase.

For one last time, the image vanishes into the final scene.

The top of the mountain: A dark fortress, seemingly an anathema to the Temple of the Smiling Lotus far below at the base of the mountain. The man, now a GrandMaster in his own right, albeit a master of evil powers, broods. Around him, silent brothers who took up his call of mystical evil practice the arts of unarmed combat, stealth, killing, and harnassing the spirit's strength for dark powers.

As this image dissapates, you open your eyes and find yourself standing once more in the grotto of the GrandMaster.
