You pick up and begin to read The Book of Shadows.

Many ages past, thieves were hunted down and slaughtered in
numbers.  Lawbringers took many of the hands of thieves.  There
were no safe houses or hideaways they could go to.  If one were
ever caught stealing, he could consider his life over.  It was
at this time that the most powerful rogues in the realm combined
forces.  They were comprised of master thieves, elusive wizard
thieves, and mysterious grimbrands.  Together, they pulled their
revenue and constructed a thieves safe house.  They named it the
Killer Clan Camp.  In the camp, all types of rogues could sit back
and relax while telling about their adventures. Meanwhile, the
constructors of Killer Clan Camp wanted something more.  They
wanted a secret place from all the others.  This would be a place
where they could hold meetings, store their possessions, and drink
some ale quietly.  What they built was far more than any thief could
imagine.  Their subterranean complex was literally a thief's paradise.
The group survived for ages by taking in young powerful rogues to
replace the ones who has passed.  The group was known as (The rest of
the page was seemingly burnt in a fire.)

(The next paragraph is written in a different hand.)
Sometime in the last age, the existance of the group became known to the
Lawbringers.  They pillaged the Killer Clan Camp in a swarm overtaking
the guards.  A bloody and gruesome inquisition took site there.  They
tortured all they caught and orderered them to tell the location of the
group.  The young thieves had never heard of such a thing so they died by
torture.  However, there was a cunning but weak minded fool among them.
He knew about the group, and he bargained his life for their location.
He took them to the hideout where they immediately slayed him.  Then they
set fire to the hideout and covered all possible routes of escape.  Inside,
the group was holding a meeting when the fire was discovered.  They
immediately rushed to the exits and were caught offguard by the lawbringers.
Sadly, few of the group survived.  It was a dark day in our history.

I saved this book as a part of our legacy.  I am too old to rebuild, so I
am sending my heir to do so.  We will re-emerge.
